Sarah C. Egeland, age 82, of Ankeny passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022. A memorial service will be held at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.) on January 29, 2022 with visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, followed by a service at 3:00 pm. Burial will be at a later date. Sarah Christine Egeland was born in Webster City on April 12, 1939, the youngest child of Howard A. and Thora E. (Christensen) Furman of rural Kamrar, Iowa. She was baptized at the farm home in August of 1940. She lived in Jewell, Webster City and on the homestead with her mother and siblings.

Sarah graduated from Webster City High School in 1957, and Webster City Junior College in 1960 with an Associate of Arts degree in Education. She taught kindergarten and worked various office jobs.

On April 1, 1961 Sarah was united in marriage to George H. Hovland at Bergan Lutheran Church in Roland, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Mark, Michele and Kathleen. They lived in Tennessee, Hawaii and California while he served in the U.S. Navy. The family returned to Iowa in early 1967 and on December 3, 1967 George perished in a small aircraft accident near Davenport, Iowa.

On February 14, 1970 Sarah was united in marriage to Irving H. Egeland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union one daughter, Anne was born. The family lived in Ankeny, Iowa Falls, Jewell, Rockwell City, Worthington (MN), Gowrie and then back to Ankeny.

Preceding Mrs. Egeland in death were her son, Mark; parents; grandparents; first husband; half-brother Jimmie Dean, brother Gary; sister Mary; and other extended family. She is survived by her husband; daughters, Michele (Reginald) Richardson, Kathleen Hovland and Anne (Thomas) Owens; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane Baldus and Gretchen Zickefoose.

Sarah requested that memorials be given to Hope Ministries: Bethel Mission in downtown Des Moines, IA or Wildwood Hill Ranch of Iowa, 2552 Union Lane, St. Charles, Iowa 50240.
