Rev. Ralph E. Shafer, 92, of Lyons, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center at Lyons. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Foster Chapel, with Rev. Robert L. Freisen officiating. Burial will be in the Cass Township Cemetery, north of Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 9 a.m. to service time.

Ralph E. Shafer, son of Edward and Nettie Whaley Shafer, was born August 24, 1912 at Webster City. He received his education in the Webster City schools, graduating from Lincoln High. He farmed with his parents until 1936, then worked at Diamond Brothers Store at Webster City. On September 2, 1937 he married Ovella Satre at Jewell. He was a Nazarene minister, graduating from the John Fletcher College at Oskaloosa, and serving at Liberal, Plainville, Winfield, McPherson, Hosington, Wellinton, Kingman, Arkansas City, Gaylord (all in Kansas) and was Senior adult pastor at Bethany Church of the Nazarene at Hutchinson, Ks. They had resided at Buhler, Ks. for 15 years. Mrs. Shafer died in September of 1991. He retired from the active ministry in October of 1993 and moved to Lyons.

Mr. Shafer is survived by a foster daughter, May Lou Riley of Colorado Springs, Co., several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry Shafer and George Studley, sisters, Alberta Doolittle, Pearl Hammond and Mildred Crawford.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene at Lyons and the Lyons Kiwanis Club.
