John L. Smith, 89, of Webster City, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Foster Chapel, with Rev. Travis Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Cass Township Cemetery, north of Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and prior to the service on Friday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #191.

John Lyle Smith, son of Charles and Sadie Ferguson Smith, was born September 22, 1915 on a farm near Renwick. He attended a rural school in Lake Township in Humboldt County. During W.W. II, he served with the U.S. Army - 3rd Armored Division in the European Theatre of Action. On May 12, 1950 he married Dorothy Viola Kena at Mountain Home, Ark. The couple resided at Yellville, Ark., later moving to Woolstock, then to Webster City in 1969. In Arkansas, he worked on the Bull Shoals Dam Project, then at Webster City he worked at the Webster City Iron and Metal. He then owned an iron salvage business, retiring in 1975. Mrs. Smith died November 20, 1996. He continued to reside at Webster City.

Mr. Smith is survived by daughter, Linda Williams and her friend, Paul Neeson of Fort Dodge, sons and daughters-in-law, Lyle and Valerie Smith, David Smith, all of Webster City, Dale and Barbara Thompson of Fort Dodge, 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, brother, Gladney Smith of China; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Charles Smith, sisters, Arlene Meyer and Virginia Otto.
