Joseph W. Johnson, 88, of Ames, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005 at Riverside Manor. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at First Evangelical Free Church, 2008 24th Street in Ames, with Rev. David Staff officiating. Visitation will be at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th Street in Ames on Sunday, Jan. 9, from 2-4 p.m.

Joseph W. Johnson, son of Albert and Clara (Michelson) Johnson, was born Sept. 17, 1916 on a farm near Duncombe. He received his education at a rural school near Duncombe, then graduated from Webster City High School. He was married to Muriel (Brownfield) for 33 years and farmed near Duncombe. They later divorced. After retiring from farming, he married Patricia (Brender) Hagler in Mesa, Arizona on Nov. 10, 1975 and they eventually moved to Ames.

Joe is survived by his wife of 29 years, Patricia, a son, Dean (Roma) Johnson (Hawaii), two daughters, Ashley Lewis (California) and Amber Johnson (California), eight grandchildren, Kim Lewis (Ohio), Kristy Lewis (Grinnell, IA), Joel Johnson (Hawaii), Chris Johnson (Hawaii), and Matt Johnson (Ft. Dodge, IA), Debbie Bergman (Stratford, IA), Julie Kudron (Illinois) and Jamie Johnson (Webster City, IA), 12 great-grandchildren, two step-daughters, Cindy (David) Vavroch of Burlington, IA and Leanne (Mark) Rasmussen of Blue Springs, Missouri, one step-son, Mark (Deb) Hagler of Morris, Illinois, 8 step-grandchildren, two sisters, Clarene (LeRoy) Schwendemann of Lehigh, IA and Mae Johnson of Huntsville, Alabama, a brother-in-law, Gerald Whisler of Webster City, IA, niece, Marilyn Marrone of Marshalltown, IA and other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Carter Johnson (Feb 2004) and one grandchild, Lori Johnson (July 2000).

Joe was an active member of First Evangelical Free Church in Ames, and at the Heartland Senior Center, singing in the Songbird choral group.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be directed to "The Journey" fund at First Evangelical Free Church of Ames.
