Maurice J. White, Sr., 73, of Dows, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2004 at the Hamilton County Hospital, Webster City. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 1 at the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows at 10:30 a.m. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Maurice J. White, Sr. was born September 19, 1931, the son of Ora and June (Burt) White at the family farm in Galt. He was baptized at the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows. Maurice graduated from the Dows High School, attended Iowa State College and entered the U.S. Army in August 1952. He served with the United States Army Headquarters for Europe which was located in Heidelberg, Germany. Maurice returned from the Army in August of 1954 and started farming the home farm. Maurice married Sharon Fraser on December 15, 1957. They continued to farm until 1988 when they discontinued farming. Maurice was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Ames on April 25, 1987 and continued working there until February of 1997. Maurice was a founding member of the Abundant Life Chapel where he served as an elder for many years. He served on the Rural Electric Coop Board for 26 years, the Wright County Farmers Insurance Board, The Farmers Home Administration County Committee, Rural Fire Association Board, as a township trustee, and a 4-H leader. Maurice also served as a Commodity Grain Inspector for the Agricultural Stabilization Committee. He was a charter member of the Wright County Gun Club, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Maurice enjoyed all sports and was an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls, and especially loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by three children, Maurice Jr. and wife, Cathy of Williams; Diane Sutherland and husband, Quin of San Diego, California; Phyllis Jacobson and husband, Darwin of Woolstock; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
