Dean Carlson, 74, of 565 Alfred, in Stanhope, Iowa passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa on Wednesday afternoon, October 13, 2004.

He was born on March 1, 1930 in Stratford, Iowa the son of Roy and Maude (Bergman) Carlson.

On May 28, 1955, he married Avis Carlstedt at Webster City, Iowa.

Dean was a 1948 graduate of Stanhope High School. He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan from January 1951 until January 1954 as a field telephone scout observer during the Korean Conflict. For 22 years, Dean worked for Cargill and the former Quaker Oats Company and at Skarshaug Testing Laboratory in Ames from the mid 70s until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of the Marine Corp League and VFW both of Boone, and Fredrick Sonksen Post #576 of Stratford, Iowa. Dean enjoyed fishing, refinishing furniture, and growing tomato plants.

His parents, and one daughter, Cara Jo Carlson preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Avis of Stanhope, Iowa, one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lynn Carlson of Stanhope, Iowa, one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Rex Silvey of Dayton, Iowa, two granddaughters, Cara Hromidko and her husband Mike of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dena Coleman of Cedar Falls, Iowa, two great-grandchildren, Clayton Hromidko and Grace Hromidko both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, two brothers, Don Carlson and his wife Maxine of Ogden, Iowa, Bob Carlson and his wife Pat of Jolley, Iowa, and one brother-in-law, Dale Mann of Tucson, Arizona.

Services were held on Saturday morning, October 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratford Baptist Church in Stratford, Iowa with Pastor Jim Mead and Layperson Gina Spohnheimer officiating.

Following services, the body will be cremated and a private family interment service with flag presentation by the Fredrick Sonksen Post #576 of Stratford will be held in Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford, Iowa at a later date.
