James W. Walling, 61, Webster City, died Monday, August 28, 2000 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames due to complications of diabetes. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church with Revs. Terry Davenport and Henry Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Coulter Cemetery in Coulter following the services. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Foster Funeral Home and until 8:30 a.m. Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church.

James Wilson Walling, son of Mark and Mary Wilson Walling, was born April 15, 1939 in Davenport. He attended Spencer Schools, graduating in 1957. He served in the U.S. Marine Reserves and attended Buena Vista College (now Buena Vista University) in Storm Lake where he received degrees in History and Speech. He received his masters and ed specialist at the University of Northern Iowa and then served as superintendent of Grand Valley Community School at Kellerton. After a period of farming in southern Iowa, he returned to business school. He taught at an Indian reservation in Arizona and at the Crow Creek reservation in South Dakota. He also taught one year in Tunteliac, Alaska, near the Bering Strait and also served as the superintendent of the Revere, Mo., school system. On June 3, 1989, he married Patricia Busby Morris in Latimer, where the couple resided. He was a substitute teacher for various schools in the area. The couple owned and operated The Neighbor's Place restaurant from 1989 to 1991. They then moved to Des Moines, where he taught at various schools in the Des Moines system. He returned to college in 1993 and received his special education endorsement. From 1993 to 1996, he taught special education in the Waterloo school system. In August of 1997, he received his permanent special education certification and taught at Southeast Webster at Burnside until February of 1999, when he had to retire due to failing health.

Survivors are his wife Pat; daughter, Cosie Leigh Walling; son, Travis James Walling; step-children and their spouses, Sondra and Jim Morris Donald of Ames, Melissa and Bob Worman Hill of Belmond, Darren Morris of Iowa City; Todd and Michelle Morris of Clive; four grandchildren, Haley Morris, Brooklyn Hill, Jacob Morris and Zachary Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Webster City, was a member of the National Rifle Association, Izaak Walton League of Hamilton County and the Phi Delta Kappa.
