Robert Warren Steig was born in Pocahontas on Oct. 17, 1922, the second eldest child of Walter F. and Rebecca Wilson Steig. The family lived in the Storm Lake area before moving to Correctionville where Bob attended school through the 11th grade. He then transferred to Storm Lake High School, graduating in 1943.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served about two years in the Philippines, and was honorably discharged in April, 1946. He married Frances Straight of Storm Lake on March 29, 1946 at the First Methodist Church of Storm Lake. He was employed in the grocery business in Storm Lake, Nevada, Washington and Webster City, retiring from Webster City Custom Meats in 1987.

Bob's primary interest was his family. He was an avid sports fan, reflecting his school years when he lettered in four major sports for four consecutive years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, furniture refinishing and bird-watching. One of his special joys was taking his family on travels in the United States and Canada. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #191 of Webster City and a former Amvets and Moose Lodge member.

He is remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, a loyal friend and neighbor. He delighted in his eight wonderful grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, three children and their families: Roxanne and Steve Tjaden, Elizabeth and Benjamin of Lakeside; Roger and Ruth Steig, Ryan, Reggie, Rachel and Rebecca of Webster City; Russell and Dorothy Steig, McKinley and Evan of Carlisle, two brothers and their spouses, DeWitt and Ruby Steig, Storm Lake, and Walter and Betty Steig, Sioux City, a brother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Straight, Newton, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
