Darwin J. Hartnett, 61, of Webster City, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at the Hamilton Hospital following a short illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with Rev. John Flaherty, celebrant. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, followed by a scripture service at 7:00. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191.

Darwin John Hartnett, son of Martin and Helen Hanrahan Hartnett, was born March 9, 1944 at Webster City. He graduated from Webster City High School in 1965 and attended the Iowa Central Community College at Webster City until he was called into service. He served with the U.S. Army-communications in Korea during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge, he returned to Webster City and started working as a fireman with the Webster City Fire Department. On October 18, 1969 he married Judy Jean Dake at Webster City. The couple resided at Webster City. He started employment with the Maudlin Construction Company, which was later purchased by Weaver Construction, then Weavers was purchased by Martin Marietta Aggregates. He served as land manager for the company.

Darwin is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Jake Anonson of West Des Moines; Jody and Scott Moats of Westfield; son, Jay Hartnett of Webster City; granddaughters, Keara and Camryn Anonson; McKenna Moats; brothers and sister-in-law, Don Hartnett of Clear Lake; Tom and Edna Hartnett of Webster City; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, David Dake; sisters-in-law, Jan and Pam Hartnett; niece, Angie Hartnett.

He was a lifetime member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, St. Thomas finance committee member, religious education instructor and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was very involved in his community, serving on the U.S. 20 Corridor Association, past president of the Association of Business and Industry at Webster City, a member of the American Legion Post 191-where he served as chairman of the Memorial Day and Veteran's Day activities and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His passions included his church, his family and friends, the progress of Webster City, sprint car racing and riding his motorcycle. Darwin was a beloved husband, father, brother and friend.
