Man dies in accident at WC Custom Meats

A tragedy at Webster City Custom Meats this morning took the life of 58-year-old DeWayne Craven of rural Webster City.

Craven died in a skid loader mishap that was reported to Webster City Police at 6:29 a.m. Wednesday.

While the investigation into the accident is very preliminary at this time, it appeared that Craven had become trapped between the lift arm and frame of the skid loader after the load shifted.

Webster City Firefighters were summoned to the scene and removed the front door of the skid loader's arm and lifted the arm off the victim. Hamilton County Coroner Dr. E.K. Lowary was also notified, as well as the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

The tragedy was being hard-felt at Custom Meats, where Craven had worked for 20 years and served as a loading dock foreman. He also had family members working at the company.

"He was an extremely dedicated and hard working employee with an impeccable attendance record," company officials said in a statement released this morning.

"Webster City Custom Meats employees are extremely saddened by his loss and wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Mr. Craven's family," the statement continued.

Craven is survived by his wife, Colleen, and sons Ken and Brian. Services are pending and will be announced later by Foster Funeral home.
