Milton J. Smith, 80, longtime resident of the Webster City community, died at 9:23 Sunday morning at the Golden Age Nursing home following a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. S.W. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland cemetery.

Milton Jefferson Smith, son of John Riley and Minerva Catherine Smith, was born Sept. 22, 1887, in a log cabin on a farm near Kinmundy, Ill., and was reared and educated in that community. When he was 19 years old, he moved to Iowa, locating in the Kamrar community, later moving to Webster City.

He was united in marriage Feb. 12, 1913 to Harriet Alice Studley, and following their marriage they made their home on a farm near Stanhope for two years. They then moved to a farm north of Webster City, residing there three years before moving to a farm near Kamrar where they lived until 1936. The family moved to Scranton and later to Oskaloosa where Mr. Smith was employed by the Royal 400 Oil Co. The family later lived in Nevada, where he was employed by the Skelly Oil Co., returning to Webster City in 1937. He was employed as bulk agent for the DX Oil Co. for 18 years. In later years, he served as a bookkeeper for the Standard Oil bulk distributors of this city. He was preceded in death by his wife Feb. ?, 1958; by one son, Donald Milton Smith; a daughter, Velda Alice Smith, who died in infancy; a grandson, Jon Milton Coulter, and by his parents.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Elwin (Florence) Sweazey of this city; three grandchildren, Robert James Coulter of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Lanny (Rebecca Ann) Machovec of Webster City and Bradley Laurence Coulter of Webster City; two great-grandchildren, Mathew Wayne Coulter and Melynda Marie Machovec; two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Ben Reese and Mrs. Emil Stout, both of Jewell; W.V. Smith of Boone and Elbert Smith of Iowa Falls, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church.
