John B. Essig, 71, a longtime resident of the Webster City community, died early Sunday morning at his home, five miles south of Stanhope.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Paul Heath of Sioux City officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

John Beerman Essig, son of John and Elizabeth Beerman Essig, was born Nov. 12, 1895, at Webster City and was reared and educated in the Webster City community.

In July, 1917, he entered the armed services and served with the U.S. Army in France. Following his discharge in 1918, he returned to Webster City.

He was united in marriage April 3, 1920, to Susan Elizabeth Seiser, and the couple farmed in the Webster City area until 1964, moving then to their present farm five miles south of Stanhope.

He is survived by his wife; two sons and three daughters, Mrs. Lee (Dorothy) Kennedy and Edward Essig, both of Fort Dodge; Richard Essig, Webster City, Mrs. Sue Pruismann, Boone and Mrs. Gary (Alice) Hayes of Webster City; seven grandchildren; one brother, Walter Essig of Carlton, Minn. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren; his parents; two brothers, Albert Essig and Theodore Essig and one sister, Mrs. Matilda Buettner.

Mr. Essig was a member of the Methodist church and was a member of the American Legion.
