Daily Freeman Journal, Webster City, Iowa, August 29, 2017

Duane Segar died Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City following a brief illness. He was 84.

Duane Robert Segar was born November 28, 1932 in Webster City to his parents, Cliff and Eloise (Pavey) Segar. He was the youngest of their four children. Duane graduated from Webster City High School in 1950. On August 31, 1952 he married Marlene S. Ankrum. Together they raised their family of three children. A lifelong resident of Webster City, he worked 46 years at the Electrolux plant, retiring from there in 1998. For many years, Duane also worked part-time at the McCollough Bros Service Station. In the 1980's and 1990's, Duane and Marlene got interested in antiquing, a hobby they both enjoyed. During this period, much of their free time was spent attending auctions and setting up and selling at flea markets and antique shops.

Duane will be remembered as a quiet, kind person and as a wonderful father and grandfather. Within the family, he had a legendary reputation for being extremely frugal when tending to his own needs, but known to be very generous when anyone else in the family needed something. If you needed it, he saw to it that you got it. He also had a sweet tooth and his well stocked candy closet was a popular destination whenever family came to visit. Above all, his greatest joy in life was just getting outside and going for long walks, which is something he did on an almost daily basis up until the last month of his life. For Duane a walk was measured in miles, not blocks. He will be missed greatly by friends and family alike.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Delayne Segar of Fort Dodge; son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Diane Segar of Ankeny; daughter, Chris Segar of Des Moines; four grandchildren; Aaron Segar, Katie Underberg, Rossi Segar and Danielle Segar, great grandchildren; Kayla Underberg, Alivia Underberg, Kinsley Segar and Ellie Segar, sister, Norma Jean Frakes and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Verne Segar and sister Marian Stuart.

Per Mr. Segar's wishes, there will be no services. Condolences may be sent to: 1328 2nd St., Webster City, IA 50595. No flowers please. All memorials will be given to the Salvation Army.
