Charles F. Starr, a native of Sweden, enlisted in Company H, Iowa 30th Infantry Regiment Iowa as a private on September 14, 1862. At the time of enlistment his residence was Glendale. He was taken prisoner by the Confederacy on August 12, 1863 at Black River, Mississippi and taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He died of disease as a prisoner of war at Andersonville. He was buried in grave 5410 at Andersonville National Cemetery.

The memorial marker at South Marion Cemetery reads:

C. F. Starr
Co. H 30th Inf.
Died Aug. 10, 1864 (Died on 12)
And was buried at Andersonville prison
Aged 35 yrs. 11 mo's, 4 ds.

Carl Fredrik Stjerna was born November 17, 1826 (and baptized on November 19, 1826) at Norrköpings Östra Eneby, Östergötland, Sweden, the son of Johan Stjerna (b. 6 Jul 1784) and Stina Nilsdotter (b. 17 Aug 1785). He married Inga Paulina Hägg on December 31, 1848 at Norrköpings Östra Eneby, Östergötland, Sweden.
