Woman Killed in Auto-Train Collision Here

Tragic Mishap Is Fatal to Mrs. Britson, 69

Mrs. Hattie Britson, 69, of Webster City, was instantly killed at 10:20 this morning when the car she was driving was hit by a fast-moving Illinois Central freight train at the main IC crossing on Des Moines St.

Witnesses said that Mrs. Britson, who lives at 316 North Des Moines St., apparently had driven onto the tracks, then had either stopped or stalled and was attempting to back off when the freight train hit the car.

The car was tossed 32 feet by the impact with the west-bound freight train which was made up of 109 freight cars and five Diesel engines.

Mrs. Britson was reportedly heading south, evidently enroute to the business district. She has been working at the Britson Distributing Co., but Monday was her day off.

The body was taken to the Berguson Funeral home in Radcliffe where services are pending.

Officials said that Sam Burns of Waterloo was engineer of the train. Conrad Strudthoff, Waterloo, was head brakeman; Larry Brieline, Cedar Falls, was rear brakeman and H.L. Staley, Cedar Falls, was the conductor.

Mrs. Britson is survived by four sons and one daughter, Ward and Allan Britson, both of near Radcliffe; Wallace Britson, Webster City, Everett Britson, Atlantic, Iowa, and Mrs. Joe Lynch, Oak Lawn, Ill.; also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nadine Britson of Dallas Center, Iowa; several sisters and 21 grandchildren.

Time and place of the funeral services will be announced tomorrow.
