John Patterson, 96, Boston, Mass., died July 7, 2001, after a short illness at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the South Marion United Methodist Church in Stratford. The Rev. Dale Schoening will officiate.

Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery in Stratford.

Mr. Patterson, son of John and Sophia (Bjustrom) Patterson, was born Nov. 26, 1904, in Stratford. He received his masters in agricultural engineering from Iowa State University in Ames and his masters degree in journalism before moving to New York City where he worked in his own public relations office. He created Film Strip House where he sold film strips to educational institutions, both public and private.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert and Rosine Patterson of Lexington, Mass.; a grandson, John Patterson; a granddaughter, Lissa Patterson; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Carlson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford. Visitation will continue Thursday from noon until the time of the service at the South Marion United Methodist Church. The family will be present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark-Welin Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Athens Woods Estates in Stratford where the library is named in his honor.
