Peter J. Johnson Dies at Rural Home

Peter J. Johnson, 80, a long time resident of this community, died at his farm home six miles south of town at 1 o'clock this morning. The cause of his death was due to complications of old age. He had been ill since September. He was born at Uppsala, Sweden, Sept. 17, 1859, and came to the United States fifty-seven years ago. He settled near Stratford and fifty years ago settled on his present farm where he has lived since that time.

He was married to Emma Samuelson at Boone in 1884. His wife, three sons and two daughters survive him. The sons are Cecil, of Fonda, Chester, of Boone, and Walter at home. The daughters are Mrs. Nels Johnson of Carroll, Mrs. Harold Essig of Pocahontas. There are ten grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded him in death.

Mr. Johnson was one of those rugged settlers of the Swedish migration who developed our community. A man of upright character and a good neighbor, held in high respect by all who knew him.

Mr. Johnson's funeral under the supervision of Foster's at Webster City, will be held Saturday afternoon at South Marion church. Rev. Murray Duncan will preach the sermon. Services will be held at 1:30 at the house and 2:30 at the church with burial in South Marion cemetery.

He was united in marriage with Miss Emma Samuelson in Boone on April 28, 1884 and to this union seven children were born, four sons and three daughters. Having reached the sunset years of life, the body which had known so much toil began to weaken until the infirmities incident to old age caused him to take to his bed and eventually to pass from this life.

[all three obituaries spelled his daughter's name differently - according to his wife's obituary I think Essick is the correct spelling]
