County Pioneer Dies at Stanhope

Mrs. Hannah Johnson was born in Sweden, September 7, 1836, and died at her home near Stanhope, Iowa, August 23, 1917, aged 80 years, 11 months and 16 days.

She came with her husband to America fifty-one years ago, landing in New York July 4th. From there they came to Illinois, living at Rock Island and Moline about five years. Then they moved to Iowa, settling on their present farm forty-six years ago, where she lived until her death. Mr. Johnson died thirty-six years ago last May. There were born to this union eight children, three sons and five daughters. Two sons, Charley and Fred, and three daughters, Annie, Ella and Tilda, with one grandson, Arthur Gustafson, one brother, and a number of near relatives and friends are left to mourn the loss of a kind mother and loving friend. One son and two daughters preceded their mother to the better land.

The funeral service was held from the family home on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G.H. Dick. The text was from the book of Isaiah, 4th chapter and 6th, 7th and 8th verses. Her remains were laid to rest in the South Marion cemetery. -Stanhope Enterprise
