Obituary
Berggren

Alfred H. Berggren, the sixth child of John and Mary Berggren, was born in Moline, Ill., January 6, 1866, and died at the home of his sister, Ida Johnson, in Stanhope, June 11, 1917, aged 51 years, 8 months and 5 days.

In 1867, when but a small child, his parents moved to East Marion, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. His entire life, with the exception of a very few years, was spent in this county. He leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers and one sister, John Berggren of Stratford, Iowa; Gust Berggren of East Marion, Iowa, and Ida Johnson of Stanhope, Iowa. He held a number of positions of trust, church clerk for a number of years, town clerk, secretary of the school board, and for some time held a position in the local bank. He was for some years in business for himself in Stanhope in earlier days.

Alfred was well known and liked by all. Was an active member of the Stanhope Church of Christ, and as long as health permitted was found facing toward the House of God every Lord's Day. The last few years he was confined to his wheel chair almost constantly, but "went to church by telephone," as he used to say nearly every service. While denied the joy of meeting with friends in the church from week to week, he could hear all the messages from the pulpit and keep in close touch with the work of the church.

In looking through his register of daily events, the writer was profoundly moved by finding even the subjects of sermons which he had heard discussed. Following the subjects would be found "Good sermon." "Good advice," "Could hear fine today," etc. Also when special numbers were given, the name of the person, also the name of the snog used, thus showing the sacred relation which he sustained to the church. - Stanhope Enterprise.

Alfred was a business man during the days when the town of Stanhope was growing, and was one of the owners who lost their buildings in the two big fires in the Stanhope business district.
