Mark A. Sandvig, 79, Ellsworth, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth with Rev. Mike Herschberger to officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Becker Funeral home in Jewell.

Mark Anson Sandvig was born June 2, 1920 in Roland, the son of Edward and Jemima Osmundson Sandvig. He attended Roland schools and graduated from Roland High School in 1938. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941, serving six years. During the war, he was a mechanic aboard PT boats in the Pacific Theatre, patrolling the waters off New Guinea. He left the service with a Chief Motor Mechanic rating. After the service, he went to Milwaukee to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering. On Sept. 24, 1949 he married Janice Brund at Chicago. They moved to Des Moines in 1951 where he worked at Des Moines Wheel and Rim. In 1954, they moved to Webster City and he was employed at Christensen Motors. They lived in Blairsburg for a number of years then moved to Ellsworth where he owned and operated the Hiway Garage automotive repair shop. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion, serving as post commander for a number of years.

Survivors are his wife Janice, Ellsworth; daughters and sons-in-law, Leslee and Jon Mogensen of Rockwell City, Debbie and Bob Schemmel of Dexter, Bonnie and David Cobler, Ottumwa, seven grandchildren, a great-grandson, two sisters, Mildred Doop of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Sadie Faust, Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jack and a sister Edna.
