Marie Martens, 95, formerly of Arizona, died at the Stratford Care Center in Stratford on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Stratford Baptist Church in Stratford with Rev. David Fernlund officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. The Stark-Welin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marie E. Carlson, daughter of Clarence and Agnes Johnson Carlson, was born Dec. 22, 1904 near Stratford. She was a graduate of Stratford High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from Bethel College in St. Paul. She married Ivan P. Martens. She taught in the rural schools in Stratford nine years, moving to Arizona where she was a secretary/bookkeeper for a lumber company for many years. In 1993, she moved from Arizona to Stratford. She moved to the Evangelical Free Church Home in 1995 and later the Ogden Manor. For the past week, she had resided at Stratford Care Center.

She was a member of the Stratford Baptist Church.

Survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce Martens of Stratford, Stuart and Lois Martens of Salida, CO., one sister, Mabel Bergman, Stratford, two nieces, Mary Johnson and Frances Jenkins, both of Stratford, and many great nieces and nephews.
