Sarah Alvestad, 93, Story City, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with Chaplain Sandy Anenson to officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Friends may call at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell from 6-8 p.m. on Friday. A memorial fund has been established for Bethany Manor in Story City.

Sarah Geneva Olson, daughter of Ed and Christina Thoreson Olson, was born in Scott Township of Hamilton County on Feb. 14, 1906. On March 29, 1928 she married Roy Alvestad in Ellsworth. They had farmed in the Jewell area and lived in Jewell most of their married life, moving to Cedar Place in Story City in the 1980's. Sarah was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are two daughters, Doris Twedt of Ellsworth and Betty Felt of Waukee; two sons, Dale of Santa Barbara, CA., and Wayne Alvestad of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Bell of Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985, four brothers, Leonard, Talbert, Ernest and Donald, and a sister in infancy.
