Sad Death of Prominent Citizen

The death last Friday of C.A. Spong at his home just west of Stratford, came as a shock and a blow to this entire community. In his usual health Wednesday he performed the usual duties of his farm, he was taken seriously ill Thursday and at 6 o'clock Friday evening he had passed to his Maker. His illness commenced with a very severe headache which was induced by his ailment - diabetes - and in a few hours he was unconscious and entirely oblivious to his surroundings. Medical aid was summoned but was of no avail and in less than thirty six hours after his first attack he lay a corpse.

He had been prominent in many of the progressive movements in Stratford and locality. He had taken an active part in the directory boards of several corporations. And his kindly manner in every business transaction, his honesty and integrity will long be remembered.

He was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and sturdy constitution and he had an unusually sun-shiny disposition. He met most of the conditions and situations of life with a joke. He was a practical, matter-of-fact man, but had his own peculiar way of exacting merriment from life as it went along, and he was not disposed to worry about matters that could be bettered in other ways. This cheerful spirit remained with him to the last of his consciousness. He was a good neighbor, and there was no happier family circle in the land than his. When the news of his death became known, the grief that was felt over the close of his career was widespread and sincere. His best monument will be the good report that he has left behind him in the community in which he has lived for so many years.

He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that the man who scatters flowers along the pathway of his fellowmen, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness, is following in the footsteps of his Master.
