MRS. CAROLINA SPONG

Mrs. Carolina Spong was born Jan. 8, 1860 in Ostergotland, Sweden, and died in her home here, Feb. 24, 1934, at the age of 74 years, 1 month, 16 days. The immediate cause of her death was an accidental fall down a stairway in her home early last week from which she received injuries and shock from which she never recovered.

Deceased was united in marriage to C.A. Spong in 1882 in Sweden and together they came to America in 1885, locating in this vicinity.

Here they lived in the farming community until the death of her husband and father in 1918 when deceased moved into Stratford and had since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Leonard Johnson.

She is survived by the following children: Axel Spong of Boone, who was born in Sweden, Mrs. Charley Johnson and Mrs. Leonard Johnson of Stratford, and Mrs. Melvin Soderbeck of Gowrie. Nine brothers and sisters also survive. They are: John Borg, Axel Borg, Mrs. John Johnson and Miss Ida Borg, all of Des Moines, August Borg of Schlieswig, Mrs. Edward Hall of Stratford, Mrs. Willie Olson of Ankeny. Besides these relatives there are 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of friends, who are bereaved at her death.

Deceased was a women of exceptionally sunny disposition and was thus beloved by all who knew her. The tragic accident which caused her death brought real sorrow into many homes here.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, at 1:30 o'clock in the Leonard Johnson home and at 2:00 o'clock in the Baptist church. The Rev. Birger Dahl of the South Marion M.E. church gave a short message in English while the Rev. A.E. Applelquist preached in Swedish. A Swedish song was sung by the Rev. Appelquist, and a duet was given by the Revs. Appelquist and Dahl and a quartet from the South Marion church sang a song. The pallbearers were Eleck Swedlund, Albert Patterson, C.G.E. Patterson, C.A. Swanson and C.G. Teander. Interment was in the South Marion Cemetery.
