Robert E. Shaeffer, 83, of Portage, Wisconsin, a former Webster City businessman, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the Tucson Medical Center at Tucson, Az. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Shelley, officiating. Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery, southeast of Stratford. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and at the church after 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Robert Erwin Shaeffer, son of Swan and Esther Peterson Shaeffer, was born February 17, 1921 at Stratford. He attended Stratford Public School and graduated from Lincoln High at Webster City in 1939. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. On January 16, 1944, he married Wanda M. Burgin at Washington, D.C. The couple resided at Webster City. They owned and operated Bob's Corner Market from 1950-1964, then purchased the Tiger Muskie Resort and Trailer Park at Hayward, Wisconsin. They retired in 1983 and in 1994 moved to Portage and wintered in Tucson since 1989.

Mr. Shaeffer is survived by his wife, Wanda; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Bruce Christianson of Irma, Wis.; Patricia and Darell Larson of Lyndon Station, Wis.; grandchildren, Bob and Diane Hayes of Mosinee, Wis.; Kris and Mike Pearson of Wausau, Wis.; Leah Larson of Madison, Wis.; Lindsay Larson of Minneapolis, Mn.; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Miranda Hayes; Morgan and Drew Pearson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Harriett and Alton Berggren.

He was a memmber of the Portage United Methodist Church. His former memberships were: Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge #735, Kiwanis, Lions and Asbury United Methodist Church, all of Webster City.
