Obituary

John A. Poulson

John August Poulson was born April 24, 1864, near Ottumwa, and died in his home in Stratford, Feb. 20, 1940, at the age of 75 years, 9 months, 26 days.

When he was a year old he came to this vicinity with his parents, John and Marie Poulson, who were early settlers in this part of Iowa. He was one of a family of eight children, three having preceded him in death.

On Aug. 21, 1895, he was united in marriage with Lorena Ferlen. Their home thus established was the source of his greatest contentment and the union was blessed by a family of five children, one daughter and four sons.

A son of pioneers, John Poulson very early discovered those qualities which build character and he found his greatest satisfaction in his home and in his daily work. He was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, a helpful neighbor and friend, always good natured and cheerful.

He had had a long and busy life and his short illness and sudden death came as a real shock to his loved ones and to his many friends in this community.

He leaves to mourn his dear memory, his bereaved wife, one daughter, Mrs. Paul Erickson, of Monmouth, Ill., and four sons, Frank, of Stratford, Gaylord, of Monmouth, Ill., Ellis, of Chicago, Ill. and Iven, of Stratford. Two grandchildren also survive. Other surviving relatives are: two brothers, Alfred and his twin brother, Albert, both of Stratford; Mrs. Emma Swanson and Julia Poulson, also of Stratford. A number of friends also mourn him.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24. There was a short prayer service in the home, followed by a service in the Methodist church. The services were in charge of the Rev. J.S. Hutchings, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Paul Johnson, a former pastor here, the latter preaching the sermon. Mrs. Harold Bass and Mrs. Florence Peterson sang two songs and Mrs. Paul Johnson sang a solo. Mrs. Frank Miller played the accompaniments. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery. Casket bearers were Eric Lindquist, George Erickson, John Rierson, Albert Hubner, Harold Scott, E.H. Barquist.

Mrs. John Poulson and children.

[not sure if his wife's maiden name is Ferlen or Ferlin - according to her parents headstone it is Ferlen}
