Boone Youth Dies in Farm Accident

Gary Nelson, 17, was killed instantly at 7:30 last night after the tractor he was driving tipped over and crushed him.

Nelson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Nelson, 1409 Prairie Ave., was dead on arrival at Boone County Hospital.

Dr. Robert A. Manderscheid, the attending physician, said that Nelson died "from multiple internal injuries due to crushing."

Nelson was employed at the Arthur Buechler farm, Route 4, Boone, at the time of the accident.

Roger Cook, Boone Senior High School counselor, said that Nelson was active in music and a good student.

"Gary was a fine boy," said Cook. "He was one of our top students."

Nelson, an 11th grade student at Boone High School, was primarily active in the area of music.

He placed tenor saxophone in the concert, marching and pep bands, and played lead tenor saxophone in the jazz band.

Nelson participated in several ensemble groups in state contests.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Evangelical Free Church in Boone. The Reverend Roy Newlin will officiate.

Burial will be at the South Marion Cemetery.

The Stark-Welin Chapel is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m.

Gary L. Nelson Funeral Services

Funeral services for Gary Lynn Nelson, 17, 1409 Prairie Avenue, who died Tuesday evening, May 22, will be held Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m., at the First Evangelical Free Church, with Rev. Roy Newlin officiating. Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery. The Stark-Welin Chapel is in charge of arrangements, and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. this Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m.

He was born March 16, 1956, in Boone, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. [Helen Anderson] Nelson. He was a junior at Boone High School and was a member of the Senior High Youth Group and the Senior High Sunday School Class at the First Evangelical Free Church. He also played saxophone in the concert, jazz and marching bands at Boone High.

Survivors include his parents, one brother, Brian, and two sisters, Linda and Lori, all at home, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Nelson, Concordia, Kans., besides several uncles, aunts and cousins.
