Boone couple die in bridge crash

First 1971 fatalities in county

A two-car collision late Saturday morning on the Boone river bridge near Briggs Woods park has claimed the lives of a rural Boone couple.

The double fatality marked the first and second traffic deaths in Hamilton county this year.
Dead as a result of injuries sustained in the collision are John C. Mott, 81, driver of one of the cars, and his wife, Elsie, 75.

Both were taken to the Hamilton County hospital by the Webster City fire department rescue squad following the mishap which occurred about 11 o'clock Saturday morning.

The mishap occurred as the Mott vehicle, which was southbound on Iowa Highway 17, collided with a northbound car driven by Janice Bentley, 31, of rural Webster City.

Mrs. Bentley and her daughter, Deanna, were also taken to the local hospital by the fire department rescue truck. Mrs. Bentley was treated for a cut on the lip and released. Her daughter was not injured in the mishap.

Mrs. Mott died at about 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon from massive facial injuries and a lung injury. Her husband died about 2:20 Sunday morning. He had suffered shock, five broken ribs and a fractured sternum.

The highway was closed for nearly 45 minutes as law enforcement and maintenance personnel attempted to clear the wreckage from the bridge.
The last traffic fatality in Hamilton county occurred on the night of Dec. 30, 1970 when a rural Duncombe girl was killed in an auto-train crash near Duncombe.

The accident Saturday was investigated by Deputies Jerry Farnham and Roy Olmstead, Jr., of the Hamilton county sheriff's department.

Twin rites will be at South Marion

STRATFORD - Double funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the South Marion United Methodist church near Stratford for Mr. and Mrs. John Charles Mott, Boone county couple killed in a two-car accident near Webster City.

The Rev. Ellis Andrews will officiate at the services with burial to be made in the South Marion cemetery. The bodies will lie in state at the Hanson-Stark-Welin funeral chapel in Boone from 1 to 9 p.m. today with the family being at the chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Visitation will also be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until shortly before the time of services at the South Marion church.

John Charles (Charlie) Mott, 81, was born July 8, 1890 in Hamilton county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Mott. He farmed in Hamilton county but moved to Boone county in his early childhood.
He was married Jan. 5, 1916 to Elsie Leone Good, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Good, in Boone county.

Mrs. Mott was born Dec. 6, 1895 in Boone county and had received her education in the Boone county schools.

After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Prairie Center community until March, 1919, when they moved to their present home in Harrison township, Rural Route 3, Boone.

Surviving Mr. and Mrs. Mott are one daughter and son-in-law, Genevieve and Vernon Johnson; two grandsons and their wives, Donald and Jane Johnson of Boone and David and Cheryl Johnson of Stratford; five great-grandchildren, Terri, Tracy, Troy, Krystal and Kenton Johnson, and many nieces and nephews.

Surviving Mrs. Mott are a sister, Mrs. Robert Clarke of Boone and a brother, Charles Good of Stratford.

Mr. Mott's survivors also include three brothers, Ed of Harlingen, Texas; George of Iowa Falls and Cyrus Knight of Sherwood, Ore.; and one sister, Mrs. Grace Miller of Riceville, Iowa.

Mrs. Mott was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother. Mr. Mott was preceded by his parents and two brothers.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Mott were active members of the South Marion United Methodist church for more than 50 years.
