STRATFORD - Merrill Winfield Monson, 68, longtime Stratford resident, died Tuesday at Mary Greeley hospital in Ames.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the South Marion United Methodist church with the Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating and with burial in South Marion cemetery.

The body will lie in state at the Hanson-Stark-Welin Funeral home in Stratford from Wednesday afternoon until 11 a.m. Thursday, when the body will be taken to the church.

He was born Aug. 26, 1903 in Stratford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest [Grace Olson] Monson.

On June 26, 1924 he was married to Opal Baker at Guthrie Center. The family had always since farmed in the Stratford community.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Margaret) Erickson of Stratford and Mrs. Floyd (Lois) Anderson of Polk City; one son, James Monson of Stratford; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Clarice) Carlson of Stratford and Mrs. Wilmer (Lucile) Larson of Pilot Mound, and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of the South Marion United Methodist church. He was a director for 24 years of the Stratford Co-op, and also served for many years as a director of the Stratford Mutual Telephone Co-op.
