Dorothy Hudson, 77, of Stratford, Iowa passed away at her home in Stratford, Iowa on Sunday morning, June 16, 2002 due to complications following surgery.

She was born the only child of Henry and Ottillie (Bier) Wicklow of Meridan, Minnesota on March 24, 1925. She was such a special blessing to her parents that they named her Dorothy because she was their "gift from God".

On June 13, 1949 she married Robert Hudson at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Meridan, Minnesota.

Dorothy attended elementary school in Meridan, Minnesota, including a year of confirmation schooling at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She completed her high school education at Mankato High School while attending Mankato State Teacher's College on an accelerated learning program. She was the first woman from her hometown to attend college. She also attended St. Olaf and Wartburg Colleges. She began her 29 year teaching career on a provisional certificate in Luverne, Iowa. She went on to teach at Stanhope and Cresco schools and received her degree from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1948. She taught Social Studies at Stratford Community School for 25 years, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the Stratford United Methodist Church, Methodist Woman's Club, NEA, and served on the Stratford Public Library Board. She at one time served as a correspondent for the Webster City Daily Freeman Journal and the Fort Dodge Messenger. Dorothy enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles in ink and spending time with family. She shared her life and wisdom with her perfect dozen grandchildren.

Her parents and one daughter-in-law, Renee Robbins, preceded her in death.

Surivors include her husband, Robert of Stratford, Iowa; one son, Frank Hudson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Carolyn Hudson of Riverside, Iowa; Susan and Richard Heathcote of Des Moines, Iowa; Margaret and Gary McCurdy of Springfield, Missouri; Mary and Keith Leeds of Stratford, Iowa; Ruth and David Hummel of Des Moines, Iowa; Martha and John Doyle of Menlo, Iowa; and twelve grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday morning, June 19 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stratford Community School Auditorium in Stratford, Iowa with the Rev. Dale Schoening and Layperson Gina Spohnheimer officiating.

Following services, the body was cremated with interment in South Marion Cemetery south of Stratford, Iowa at a later date.

Memorials may be given to the Stratford Public Library. Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford is in charge of arrangements.
