J.R. Gustafson Dies Suddenly

STRATFORD - J.R. Gustafson, 61, widely known retired farmer, died suddenly late Tuesday afternoon after suffering a heart attack.

He and his wife had been visiting their daughter, Mrs. Russell Anderson, on a farm south of Stratford earlier in the afternoon, and following their return to town Mr. Gustafson complained of feeling ill. He walked to the office of Dr. Beghtol and died shortly after arriving there.

Funeral services have been set for Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services are scheduled at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Peterson officiating.

J.R. Gustafson Rites Held At Stratford

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 16 from the First Baptist Church of Stratford for J.R. Gustafson of Stratford. The Rev. Stanley Peterson officiated. Rev. and Mrs. Peterson sang two requested numbers, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Ivory Palaces." Mrs. Norman D. Erickson played prelude music and accompanied. Interment was at South Marion Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Peterson, Leonard Angstrom, Julius Johnson, L.R. Anderson, Franklin Rose, Vernie Carlberg.

John Rudolph Gustafson, youngest son of John F. and Matilda [Samuelsdotter] Gustafson was born on a farm east of Stratford April 12, 1894. He passed away Feb. 13, 1956 at the age of 61 years, 10 months and 1 day. He was educated in rural schools near his home and had lived here all his life. For a number of years he played in the East Marion Band, having joined at the age of 12.

On Dec. 22, 1915 he was united in marriage with Bertha M. Newman. To this union were born three children: Marjorie, Donald and Jerold. In 1917 they moved to a farm south of Stratford where they lived until 1950 when they moved to Stratford. He continued in the operation of the farm until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Henry, Charles and Morton, two sisters, Hattie (Mrs. John Erickson), Lettie (Mrs. Oscar Erickson), and son Donald.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Marjorie (Mrs. Russell R. Anderson) and son Jerold, six grandchildren, Carolyn, Ruth, Betty, Edwin, Kathryn Anderson and Lee Ann Gustafson. A number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also mourn his death.
