Obituary

A.J. Fohlin

Funeral services for the late John Fohlin were held in the Lutheran church, Sunday, Jan. 7, and were in charge of the Rev. C.S. Ericson, pastor of the church. Song selections were sung by a mixed quartette composed of Ardelle Berglund, Velva Berglund, Axel Sandegren and Lester Anderson. Interment was in Oakwood [South Marion] cemetery with the following as casket bearers: Charley Erickson, C.G. Teander, Emil Berglund, Gust Erickson, Alfred Erickson, Nels Angstrom.

Andrew John Fohlin was born on June 4, 1859 at Västra Harg, Östergötland, Sweden, and died quietly in his home here on Jan. 5, 1940, at the age of 80 years, 7 months, 1 day.

Deceased grew to manhood in his native land and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Västra Harg church on June 24, 1874. In 1886, he and his brother came to America and located in Webster county, near Stratford. There he engaged in farming and continued in that occupation until 1913 when he with his family moved into Stratford.

He was married to Hattie Anderson in 1908. To this union two children were born, Hazel and Arthur, both of whom reside at home.

Mr. Fohlin was one of the pioneers of this section, having resided in Stratford and community for more than half a century. He was a kind hearted man, who made friends and maintained them for his kindly disposition and neighborly attitude. His supreme interest was in his home and his family.

Being very ambitious he had a strong desire to do his work even when his strength would not permit. For several months the seriousness of his condition became very apparent. Two weeks before his death he failed so that he was compelled to remain in his bed until his death.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death, one brother, Charley Fohlin, of Stratford and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Anderson, also of Stratford and Mrs. Emily Johnson of Kanawha, other relatives and a large number of friends.

[son of Carl and Catherina Andersdotter Fohlin]
