Post Date:01/21/2019 4:00 PM

Ames Electric Services announced today that Energy Services Coordinator Steve Wilson, an 18-year employee of the City of Ames, died Sunday after an accident at his home. Also known as “The Energy Guy,” Wilson served as an energy conservation resource for customers through many outlets including radio, television, and print advertising; speaking engagements; website materials; and the monthly “Ask the Energy Guy” column in the City of Ames utility newsletter. He was 64 years old.
“We were saddened to learn of Steve’s passing,” said Ames Electric Services Director Donald Kom, who together with Wilson helped create many of the utility’s educational videos. “Steve was very passionate about saving energy and providing information to people. He enjoyed working with customers, problem-solving, and helping them conserve energy.”
Wilson started the City of Ames Energy Fair shortly after he joined Ames Electric Services. Over time, the annual spring sustainability event grew larger than its original mission and is now called the Eco Fair. The Eco Fair has a broad conservation focus and includes a variety of City of Ames departments, non-profit organizations, student clubs, and businesses.
Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been released.
