FIRE FATALITY AT STRATFORD

Roland Erickson, 34, Dies at Boone After Blaze at Home.

STRATFORD - Burns suffered Tuesday morning when his clothing caught on fire as he was smoking in bed proved fatal early Wednesday for Roland Erickson, 34.

Erickson, who suffered deep burns about the neck and arms, died at the Boone county hospital, where he had been taken following the accident which happened at the Erickson home here.

When he discovered his clothing afire, Erickson called his wife, and together they extinguished the flames before they could spread but not before he was burned beyond recovery.

Besides his wife, Erickson leaves two sons, Roland and Weldon; his mother, Mrs. A.M. Erickson; two sisters, Mrs. Orin Munch and Delores Erickson and two brothers, Norman and Weldon all of Stratford.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the home of Mrs. A.M. Erickson's near Stratford and at 2:30 p.m. at the Calvary Methodist church with the Rev. J.G. Waterman officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. James Selander. Schrader Funeral home of Boone will be in charge.

Funeral services for Roland Dennis Erickson were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Calvary Methodist church, Stanhope, with the pastor, Rev. J.G. Waterman and the Rev. James Selander officiating.

A prayer service was held in the Mrs. Alfred Erickson home at 2 o'clock. A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Harold Westrum, Mrs. E.J. Bergquist, A.T. Johnson and J.H. Thuran, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "The Touch of His Hand," and "Nearer, Still Nearer," with Mrs. Roland Bell playing the accompaniment. The Rev. Selander spoke on the text Ecc 3-2 and the Rev. Waterman used as his text, James 4.4. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roy Coulson, Walter Erickson, Lee Stark, Clifford Neese, Clifford Carlstadt and Lloyd Angstrom.

Roland Dennis Erickson, eldest son of the late Alfred and Edith [Carlson] Erickson was born Sept. 9, 1909 and died Dec. 8, 1943 at the age of 34 years, 3 months and 2 days. His death was caused by serious burns received when the bedding and his clothing ignited as he lay sleeping. He attended the Stratford public schools and assisted his father in farming. He was a faithful attendant of the Baptist Sunday school in his youth.

He was united in marriage Oct. 17, 1929, to Wilma Jeanette Shoberg. Two sons were born to this union - Duane and Ivyl.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Edith Erickson; two brothers, Waldon and Norman Erickson; two sisters, Deloris, at home and Mrs. Orie Munch of Boxholm. His father preceded him in death one year and five months ago and a brother died in infancy.

He farmed until the spring of 1937 when the family moved into Stratford. In the fall of 1938 he fell from a ladder while painting a barn and had not enjoyed good health since. The sympathy of all is extended to the family and relatives.
