November 15, 1956

John Erickson, son of Olof and Martha [Ericsdotter] Erickson, was born Sept. 20, 1875, in Marion Township, Hamilton County, and passed away at Stanhope, Nov. 10, 1956, at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 21 days, death being caused by a heart attack. All of his life was spent in or near Hamilton County, Iowa.

On May 23, 1900, he was united in marriage to Hattie Gustafson and to this union five children were born: Lester and Bessie, who passed away in infancy, and Ernest, Mabel and Mildred. They established their home on his father's farm in Clear Lake Township, where they farmed until 1937, when they moved to Stanhope. They made their home until 1948 when Mrs. Erickson passed away. After that Mr. Erickson made his home with his children until the past few months when he returned to Stanhope where he lived in contentment in the Ralph Hill home.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank and Oscar, and a son Ernest; also Lester and Bessie. He is survived by his two daughters Mabel (Mrs. Gottlieb Mogensen) of Stanhope, and Mildred (Mrs. Charles Crim) of Stratford, eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a kind and loving father and also had a deep interest in his grandchildren. He loved the community he spent his life in and deeply appreciated his neighbors trying to be a good neighbor in return to them. He never wanted to be a burden to anyone, and his wish to depart from this world quickly was granted Nov. 10, 1956 when he quickly and quietly passed away.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. in the South Marion Methodist Church with the Rev. Maurice Gunn, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Arthur Larson sang: "Sweet Bye and Bye," and a Swedish hymn, accompanied by Mrs. Will Holstrum at the organ for meditation music during the services. Burial was in the South Marion Cemetery.

The funeral arrangements were in charge of the Hanson Funeral Home.
