Arlene (Mrs. Beryl) Cottington, 83, Stratford, a former Stanhope resident, died Monday evening, Dec. 2, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, where she had been a patient for 11 days.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m., at the Christian Church in Stanhope, Rev. Richard Morris officiating. Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery, east of Stratford. Visitation at the Foster Funeral Home is after 5 p.m. today until 8 a.m. Thursday, when the casket will be taken to the church.

Helen Arlene Carlson, daughter of Theodore and Jennie (Westrum) Carlson, was born Oct. 19, 1908, on a farm near Stratford. She attended rural schools in the Stratford area, and for one year, attended the 4-C's Business College in Des Moines. She married Beryl Cottington on April 17, 1929, in Stratford. The couple resided in Huron, S.D., until 1944, when they moved to Des Moines. In 1948, they moved to a farm east of Stanhope, and retired to Stanhope in 1968. For 20 years, she served as the Stanhope area correspondent for the Daily Freeman-Journal, South Hamilton Record News, and the Stratford Courier. For the past four years, she had resided at the Stratford Care Center.

She is survived by her husband, Beryl, Stratford; three sons and a daughter, Merrill Cottington, Boone; Darla Wilcox, Stratford; Gary Cottington, Pella; and Nyle Cottington, Jewell; 14 grandchildren; two brothers and a sister, Chester Carlson, Wendell Carlson and Maxine Dick, all of Stratford; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

Mrs. Cottington was a member of the Christian Church in Stanhope, the Christian Women's Fellowship, was an honorary member of the Hamilton County and State 4-H Alumni, and the Friends of Education of South Hamilton School.
