Discharged From Company C

Rendon Smith, a private of Company C, was tried by court martial last night for insubordination and non-attendance at drill and was discharged from the company "without honor" and assessed a fine of $10, which is to be paid by the 15th of this month or suit will be brought to collect it. While there is a distinction between a dishonorable discharge and a discharge without honor, it is so small that it is hard to define. A dishonorable discharge carries with it the lasting disgrace of being disfranchised, being made an outcast - a man without a country - but a discharge without honor takes away the man's right to ever serve his country in a military capacity and certain other things; but there is a question as to its taking away a man's right to vote.

AN ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

Rendon Smith, Aged Twenty, Takes Laudanum, But is Saved by Work of Physician.

Rendon Smith, aged twenty years, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Smith who live on Superior street, attempted to commit suicide Tuesday evening by taking laudanum, but was frustrated by the timely arrival of a physician. Despondency over a love affair is said to have caused the act.

It is not known where Smith got the laudanum. Two druggists are known to have refused to sell it to him. About 7:30 he called up two young lady friends, one of whom he has kept company with, over the phone and asked them to meet him in the city park. They did so and, after talking awhile, he took the laudanum from his pocket and swallowed it. The girls got him home at once and called Dr. Wyatt, who with F.B. Smith, hastened to the Smith home. Quick work saved the young man's life for he had taken enough of the drug to have killed two men.

AGAIN ATTEMPTS HIS LIFE

Rendon Smith Makes Second Attempt To Commit Suicide and is Saved By Brother.

But for the intervention of his younger brother, Rendon Smith, the young man who two weeks ago tried to commit suicide by taking laudanum, would Saturday afternoon have shot himself.

In company with a young lady and his brother, Smith was walking in the city park. Without any warning he pulled the gun from his pocket and would have shot himself but for the intervention of his brother, who wrested the weapon from him. It is said that Smith is despondent over a love affair and fears are felt lest at some future time he will succeed in his effort to take his life.
