Joan K. Rigter, 78, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of Joel A. Rigter, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family Thursday, August 25, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 in St. John's Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street, at 11:00 a.m. The family will host a reception at the church immediately following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Joan was born October 20, 1937 in Webster City, Iowa, daughter of the late Donald and Ina Steinmaus Wills. She and her husband have lived in the Charleston area for 46 years. During that time they have enjoyed traveling the U.S. in their motor-home and taking trips world-wide. Joan was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She will be remembered and cherished as a fun-loving, devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

In addition to Joel, her husband of 60 years, she is survived by her children, Joe (Kay) Rigter and Jill (Greg) Ewell; four grandchildren, Emily (Doca Arruda) Ewell, Ashley Rigter, Ellen Ewell, and Sarah (Reed) Jacobs; a great-granddaughter, Alice Ewell Arruda; three siblings, Colleen (Dean) Reinhardt, Don (Glenda) Wills, and Kent (Monika) Wills.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the MUSC Foundation: College of Nursing Annual Fund, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29425.
