Jane Barkema, age 71, of Jewell, IA, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Hubbard Care Center.

Jane Ellen (Eittreim) Barkema was born on March 17, 1946 in Story City, IA. She was the eldest of three children born to Stewart & Ilene (Berg) Eittreim.

She received her education by attending schools in Fort Dodge where she graduated with the Class of 1964.

After graduation, she worked at the Fort Dodge Messenger as a journalist.

On January 20, 1972 Jane was united in marriage to Merle “Dick” Barkema at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. They resided on a farm west of Jewell where they farmed for 20 years. She started a craft shop in Jewell called “The Junction on Main” which she operated for several years. She made and sold crafts out of her home until she passed away on July 10, 2017 at the Hubbard Care Center.

She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church.

She loved taking care of and spending time with children and grandchildren.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her three children Scott Barkema of Ellsworth, Jay Barkema of Jewell and Karla (Nate) Rohe of Clive; two grandchildren Alex and Connor; two brothers Dennis (Joani) Eittreim of Laguna Hills, CA and Brian (Kathy) Eittreim of Ellsworth; one brother-in-law Roger (Joan) Barkema of Jewell; along with many other relatives and friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
