John H. McGilligan, 74, longtime Webster City businessman, died Sunday morning at the Hamilton County hospital where he had been a patient since Friday. He had been in ill health the past six weeks.

Memorial services, following cremation, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church with Father Joseph Sullivan officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Graceland cemetery at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Hall McGilligan, son of Thomas and Zula Hall McGilligan, was born June 26, 1909 at Ledyard, Iowa. He started his elementary education there, and he moved to Webster City with his family in 1918. The family resided here until 1921 when they moved to Bancroft where he was graduated from high school in 1926. He returned to Webster City and attended the opening of Webster City Junior college.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1926, being discharged at New York City in 1931.

He was married Aug. 12, 1936, to Helena Frekey and the couple resided in New York City where they engaged in the restaurant business until 1952 when they moved to Webster City. He had been engaged in the restaurant business here until his retirement in 1970.

He is survived by his wife; his son and daughter-in-law, Mick and Chris McGilligan of Webster City; four grandchildren, John P., Debbie, Mike and Matt McGilligan; and a niece, Mrs. Ken (Bonnie) Steffin [it was spelled Steffens in his mother's obituary] of Storm Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

He was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church and the Elks lodge.
