Widely Known W.C. Stockman Dies at 75

Bascom Huddlestun Funeral Services to Be Held on Saturday

Bascom Huddlestun, 75, widely known Webster City stockman and a prominent member of the Hamilton County Fair board for many years, died suddenly at the hospital at 9 o'clock this morning following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the McCauley-Chapman funeral home with Rev. Sam T. Lenters officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Bascom Huddlestun, son of Charles B. and Barbara Lucretia Holloway Huddleston, was born March 6, 1872 [headstone says 1873] in Farmers City, Ill. He received his education in the schools there, and at the age of 16 came to this vicinity with his brother, Frank.

On Feb. 22, 1894, he was married to Lenore Layne, and the couple started farming south of Webster City. Mr. and Mrs. Huddlestun spent their entire married life in and near Webster City.

Mr. Huddlestun was prominent in agricultural activities in Hamilton county for many years. A lover of horses, he was always interested in promoting improvement in that line of stock and was for many years superintendent of the horse department at the Hamilton county fair. He was an extremely active member of the fair board and attended meetings regularly until recently when his failing health made that impossible.

He was proud of his association with the Elks lodge, being a member of the organization for more than 35 years and active in all phases of the club's work.

Mr. Huddlestun is survived by his invalid wife; two daughters, Mrs. N.M. Loring and Mrs. J.C. Russell of near Webster City; four grandsons, one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. S.B. Handley, Winfield, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and six sisters.

A generous, friendly individual, Mr. Huddlestun had made a wide acquaintance during his many years of residence in this community and through his work at the fair. His many friends will miss his colorful personality and will feel his loss as keenly as the immediate family.
