Daily Freeman Journal, Webster City, Iowa, Friday, September 15, 1933

John Whalen was born in Boone county, Iowa, Dec. 28, 1868 [headstone says 1869], and died at his home in Stanhope Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1933, at the age of 64 years, 8 months and 7 days.

For some months past Mr. Whalen had not felt as well as usual, but was able to be about and attend to his business. A few weeks ago his ailment became acute and it was found that medical skill could not check the ravages of the deadly disease that had laid hold of him.

Mr. Whalen grew to manhood in his Boone county home. March 9, 1892 he married Miss Alice Goodman. To this union two children were born, Edgar and Hazel (now Mrs. Roy Davis). For about 30 years Mr. and Mrs. Whalen made their home on their farm southeast of Stanhope. Eleven years ago they moved from the farm to their present home in Stanhope.

For some years Mr. Whalen had operated a truck and his dependable service has gained for him the confidence of the public. Mr. Whalen had always been regarded as one of the substantial business men of the community. His character and good judgment appealed to his many friends and neighbors. He served as a member of the town council, on the board of trustees of the Christian church, of which he was a member. He was also a member of the Farmers elevator board and frequently attended the grain dealers conventions. Quietly, unassumingly he filled his place in the life of the community.

He leaves to mourn his going, his widow, the two children, Edgar and Hazel, two grandchildren, Ralph and Roberta Whalen, two brothers, Albert, of Ames, and Francis, of Boone, and one sister, Mrs. Moe Nelson, of Gilbert. His brother, William, died several years ago and his brother, James, died in infancy.

A host of relatives and friends join these bereaved ones to share with them the burden of their sorrow.

The family life of Mr. and Mrs. Whalen was beautiful and the two children, with their mother were able to be constantly at his bedside to minister in love to his need. These moments of devotion and service will be held in loving memory as the years go by.

A devoted husband, a loving father, a good man has been suddenly called to his reward and we bow in humble submission to the will of our heavenly Father.
