Joe Kern, 87, of Stanhope, died Saturday at his home. He had been in failing health for the past 13 months.

Mr. Kern was cremated and graveside services will be held Weds. at 3 p.m. at the Lawn Hill Cemetery southeast of Stanhope.

Joe Kern, son of Fred and Margaret Galler Kern, was born April 13, 1898 at Urbandale and was educated at Grimes. He married Mary Elizabeth Epping at Princeton, Mo. on May 6, 1944. Mr. Kern worked as a diesel mechanic and was employed as a mechanic by Hove Truck Lines from 1956 until his retirement in 1980. The couple continued to reside in Stanhope.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; four sons and four daughters, George of Van Meter, Violet Cook of St. Joseph, Mo., Fred of Des Moines, Richard, Lillian Hill, both of Stanhope, Jerry of Huxley, Lynn (Mrs. Larry) Nothwehr, Clarinda, Jo Oberender, Des Moines; 32 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one granddaughter, parents, two brothers and two sisters.
