OBITUARY OF JACOB JACKSON

One by one the men and women who braved the storms of the Atlantic, leaving behind the land of the Midnight Sun, the land that now draws tourists from all parts of the world, and who entered America as strangers and foreigners, are passing away. The immigrants who came to America in the 60's, 70's and 80's became the pioneers of the great Northwest. They did not come to this country because of religious persecution or political tyranny, but to improve their economic conditions. Their desire was to get a portion of the untilled soil upon which they could build a home to call their own. In their baggage was always found a Bible, Luther's Catechisms, and the Hymn book. In their hearts they carried the ideals of a God fearing and liberty loving people. The great majority realized their hope of owning a home of their own through a hard struggle of brains and brawn. Their ideals of religion and freedom they have given as a heritage to their posterity.

One of these pioneers was Jacob Jackson. Coming to this country in the year 1861, with his young wife Martha, they lived to experience many struggles against poverty and sickness. But always cheerful and hopeful, spending their last days in Stanhope, they won many friends. Such citizens and neighbors as Jacob Jackson can be justly admired.

The institution that Jackson loved the best was the church. He was an active member in Norum Lutheran church where he was a regular attendant even after the walk to the church became a struggle.

After a lingering sickness, he passed away on the 31st of July, his birthday, at the age of 81 years. He leaves to mourn him his faithful wife, four sons, Joseph, Henry, Edward and George, and two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Greenwood and Mrs. Mattie Knight. There were nine children, two sons and one daughter being dead. The funeral was held from the Lutheran church Thursday of last week at two o'clock. The Pastor, Omar Brenne, conducted the service. The text for the Norwegian sermon was from Matthew V:3; and the English sermon from 1 Cor. XV:56-57. There was an abundance of floral offerings from children and friends. Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Fardal, Ida and John Iverson sang. The body was laid at rest in the Stanhope cemetery [Lawn Hill]. May his memory live and his ideals be maintained.

Mrs. Jacob Jackson and Family
