Boy's Death At Stanhope An Accident

Funeral Services to Be Held on Tuesday For Sammy Stark

The death of Samuel Jerome Stark, 7-year old Stanhope boy in a mishap while sliding on a sidewalk near his home Saturday noon, was today termed accidental by Sheriff E.R. Lear.

The youngster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlin Stark of Stanhope, was crushed when an oil truck, which was backing into a driveway to deliver fuel oil, ran over him and his sled. The sheriff said he didn't believe an inquest would be called into the mishap.

Joe Hagen, driver of the truck, stated that he had checked to make sure the driveway was clear before starting to back in, Lear said. The trucker said he was backing very slowly and stopped immediately when he felt his truck bump. It was not until then that he saw the boy with his sled.

The boy's death was the sixth traffic fatality in Hamilton county during 1948.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Stanhope, preceded by a brief service at the Stark home. Rev. Odean Monson will officiate with burial in Lawn Hill cemetery at Stanhope. Foster's funeral home is in charge of services.

Samuel Jerome Stark, son of Orlin and Dorothea Stark, was born June 3, 1941 at Stanhope. He attended schools in that community and was a student in the second grade.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters and one brother, Shirley, Carol and James, all at home. Also surviving are his grandfather, Klaus Selheim of Stanhope, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran church and attended Sunday school faithfully. A kindly, generous boy, he was well liked by all his classmates who will miss him as greatly as his immediate family.
