Henry "Hank" Sharp, age 80, of Stanhope, died Thursday, April 19, 2001 at his home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at Good Shepherd Church in Jewell with Fr. Terry Rasmussen officiating. Hank deeded his body to Des Moines University, burial will be at a later date [Lawn Hill Cemetery, rural Stanhope]. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Stanhope First Responders or the Iowa Library for the Blind. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Earl Sharp was born July 7, 1920 in Hoxie, AR to Rudolph P. and Katie (Hartsel) Sharp. Hank attended the University of Arkansas briefly before World War II interrupted his studies. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1941 through January 1946 in the Pacific Theater on Guam, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and attended the surrender ceremonies in Japan. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant during his service.

Hank married Miriam Ann Stedman on December 1, 1944 in Los Angeles, CA. Upon his discharge, they returned to Miriam's hometown of Emmetsburg, IA where he was employed Iowa Public Service. Over the course of the years his career took him to Ruthven, Sac City and Stanhope as he worked for a number of contractors as well as the Town of Stanhope, from which he retired to do independent electrical contracting. He later sold his business and fully retired. For the last several years he and Miriam (retired Stanhope Postmaster) have wintered in Glendale, Ariz.

Hank is survived by his wife, Miriam of Stanhope; his son, Larry Sharp of Madison, WI; his daughter, Cherie Hill of Ellsworth; three grandchildren; and a brother Glen Sharp of Hoxie, AR.
