Mrs. Gunhilda L. Berven [headstone reads Gunhild] was born March 6, 1853 at Hardangar, Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith to which she remained steadfast to the end.

She came to America in 1881 and the same year was married to Lars L. Berven. They resided in Wisconsin for three years, then moved to Iowa and settled on a farm three miles south of Kamrar which has been Mrs. Berven's home until the last few years of her life.

Her husband died March 1, 1893, leaving her with seven small children, the youngest one month old. One son, George, died in the year 1907 at the age of 18 years.

The last five years of her life she has been a helpless invalid and has made her home with and was cared for by her daughters, Mrs. E.D. Peterson and Mrs. A.V. Carey.

She leaves to mourn her passing six children, three sons, Iver, Nels and Severt, all residing on farms in Hamilton county, and three daughters, Mrs. Sophie Iverson, Lake Wilson, Minn.; Mrs. Clara Peterson, of Jewell, and Mrs. Louise Carey, of Ames; nineteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. George Tokheim, of Story City, and two sisters and one brother in Norway.

She has failed rapidly in health since last spring being bedfast for the past eight weeks during which time she suffered a great deal.

Mrs. Berven was a kind and loving Christian mother and waited patiently for the day when she would meet her Saviour.

She passed away Sept. 29, 1935, at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. A.V. Carey, at Ames, where she has been cared for the last year and a half.

Funeral services were held Sept. 22 at 2:30 o'clock at Zion Lutheran church. Burial was at Zion cemetery. The Rev. Carl Opsahl, of Jewell, was in charge.

Pallbearers were six grandsons: Oral Iverson, Ronald Carey, Lyle Berven, Homer Berven, Boyd Berven and Arthur Berven.
