INJURED IN RUNAWAY; DEATH IS RESULT

George Berven, Living Near Kamrar, Passes Away As Result of Injuries in Runaway

George Berven, the eighteen year old son of Mrs. G.L. Berven, residing three miles south of Kamrar, died at Hazel, S.D., Sunday morning, his death being caused by injuries received in a runaway.

On the 3rd day of July the young man went to South Dakota to work on a farm. Since that time he has resided near Hazel. A week ago Saturday the young man, in company with another person, was driving home from town where they had been shopping. It was dark and while going down a hill one of the traces came unhooked and the team ran away. The pole of the buggy ran into the ground and the young man was thrown from the buggy, lighting on his head. Since that time his condition has been very serious with little hopes of his recovery.

Besides a mother, there are three sisters and three brothers left to mourn his sad taking away.

The remains arrived here from Hazel, S.D., last evening, and the funeral was held today at 10 o'clock at Kamrar.

The Jewell Record, Jewell, Iowa, Thursday, October 17, 1907

(By Lydia Lester)

George Berven was born at the Berven farm home, three miles south of Kamrar, 18 years ago; died at Hazel, S.D., Sunday morning, October 6th, 1907, death being caused by injuries received in a runaway.

The remains were brought from Hazel, S.D., and Tuesday afternoon the funeral was conducted at the Berven home and in the Norwegian Lutheran church south of Kamrar attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The pastor of the Norwegian Lutheran church of Jewell officiated. He addressed the audience in the Norwegian language, which the writer regrets she could not understand. As I sat listening to the words I could not understand, old memories of George Berven were revived and events of days gone by when he attended a school taught by the writer, were well remembered.

The traits which characterized George Berven were his frank and unvarying good nature. The writer well remembers when a look at his sunny face lightened the work and worry in a country school room.

He had a deep sympathetic nature, kind disposition, was ever considerate of the feelings of others.

These noble attributes will cause him to live in the memory of those who knew him well, long after his departure to that Heavenly land, to which we are all hastening.

Though he has left us, it is hoped and believed, that he will inhabit a mansion beyond the river, more beautiful and gorgeous than was ever made by earthly hands. He has lived the best part of his life, childhood and youth, and escaped the cares, sorrows and disappointments of maturer years.

[son of Lars & Gunhild Berven - buried at Zion Cemetery, Hamilton Twp., Hamilton Co., Iowa]
