Vergil T. Johnson, 73, of Jewell, passed away on September 29, 2016 at Israel Family Hospice in Ames. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, October 16 at the Story City American Legion, 301 Washington Street in Story City.

Vergil was born March 10, 1943 in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Vergil H. and Bonnie (Butler) Johnson. Following his graduation from South Hamilton Community School in 1961, he entered into the United States Navy. He served 20 years in the Navy, retiring in 1984. Vergil then worked as a pressman at Record Printing in Story City for eleven years. Vergil was married to Nancy Nelson on November 27, 1981 in Harrow, England.

Vergil was very active with Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Mitigwa O.R.F. He served as treasurer at the Ellsworth United Methodist Church for 18 years. Vergil enjoyed woodworking and bass fishing.

Vergil is survived by his wife, Nancy; children: Natasha Johnson and Joshua (Yvette) Johnson; and grandchildren: Hailey Marie and Jayden Ann.
