Mervyn Dick, 86, of Webster City, a former Stanhope area farmer, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 at the Hamilton Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Stanhope Parish, with Rev. Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Saratoga Cemetery, south of Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and prior to the service at the church.

Mervyn Kent Dick, son of L.Q. and Mabel Kent Dick, was born August 21, 1917 on a farm northwest of Stanhope. He attended Stanhope Consolidated School, graduating in 1936. He started working at a gas station in Ankeny and at the D.B. Rush Hatchery at Stanhope. In 1938, he started employment as bookkeeper at the Farmers State Bank at Stanhope. On April 13, 1941, he married Myrtle Maxine Carlson at the Carlson family home, west of Stanhope. In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army for 3 years. He served with the 177th General Hospital Unit in the European Theatre. Following his discharge, he began farming his father's farm northwest of Stanhope. He retired from the grain, dairy and beef operations in 1982 and continued to reside on the 4th generation farm. He had also driven a school bus for the South Hamilton School system for 10 years. He had resided at Crestview Senior Living since 1998. Mrs. Dick died February 24, 2002.

Mr. Dick is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Steve Ostrem of Stratford, Jennifer and Tom Allen of Altoona; son and daughter-in-law, Ramon and Doris Dick of Villisca, grandchildren, Molly Spannaus, Kent, Audrey and Chad Allen, Edouard and Aaron Dick, Jared, Daniel and Crystal Ostrem, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Rollie Spannaus, granddaughter-in-law, Merry Dick, his parents, sisters, Esther Carlson, Velma Anderson and Cleo Westrum.

He was a member of the Stanhope Parish, church trustee and choir, Stanhope Lions Club, former Boy Scout # 34 leader, former board member of the Farmers State Bank, Hamilton County Historical Society, delivered Congregate Meals, enjoyed fishing, woodworking and camping.
